Free market and population health – FiA this Friday (Peter)

This coming Friday is book club at Faith in Action.  We are reading An Other Kingdom (see previous post for details).  The text is based on the premise that we need to replace the consumer market, contractual relationships with an alternative covenantal relationships).  While we should criticise the excesses of the market economy  We should also recognise its strengths especially in the area of health outcomes. Since the development of the free market whole populations have seen a dramatic and sustained increase in population level health outcomes.  Hans Roslings has created a 200 years in 4 min you tube video which is an amazing blend of story and statistics.  Regardless of whether you agree with me, take a moment to watch this video.

24 Jun – Book Club – An Other Kingdom, by Peter Block, Walter Brueggamann and John McKnight
BOOK BLURB: Our seduction into beliefs in competition, scarcity, and acquisition are creating a world of isolation, polarized debate, an exhausted planet, and violence. We need a new narrative, a shift in our thinking and speaking. An Other Kingdom takes us out of a culture of addictive consumption into a place where life is ours to create together.
