Reading and coffee Wed 24th June

June 18, 2015 | Filed under: FiA, practice, theory, Tools, workshop and tagged with: Civic Engagement, Community Organising, Peter Block, Reading

IMG_0001Yesterday I had the pleasure to have my first conversation with Doug Taylor from UnitingCare NSW. Doug is new in his role which is similar to the one I hold at Uniting Communities in Adelaide.

We were talking about the way organisations like UnitingCare NSW and Uniting Communities connects with congregations. Doug said ‘I think the future of ministry is more like  community organising’

I couldn’t agree more. The idea that we run groups and programs for people is fading away.

Next week the Faith in Action Wednesday reading group is looking at “Civic Engagement and the Restoration of Community – Changing the Nature of the Conversation”.

This was the first text which really caught my attention around community ministry.

Written in 2007 by Peter Block you will find this text asks what will it take to create an alternative community?  If your ministry is aligned with a community development approach then expect to enjoy the insights within this read!

And if you have the time join me and our colleagues over a coffee conversation.
