Great blog – inspiring to read a faith perspective – at uni there is so much about community development but so far the contemporary ‘church’ hasn’t been mentioned.

  Thanks for the comment Mary-Ella. I’ll keep your suggestion in mind. We are really focused on the Action part of Faith in Action because churches are often good about talking about themselves too themselves, but are not terribly good at doing things with people outside of their own community. When it does decide to engage it usually wants to ‘help people’ and this of itself become problematic because it sees people as deficient. Our group is focused on Community Development – drawing people and church leaders to see that their churches are part of a wider community which has value and opportunities.

  I don’t see many examples of the contemporary church using it. That might be because I’m out of touch or because it isn’t seen as important by clergy / pastors / leaders.
  Some contemporary theology (the way the church thinks about its relationship with God) is based on a deficit model. (Ie I’m a hopeless sinner (deficient) and God rescues me.) Which is incongruent with Assets Based Community Development which directs us into a search of the positive aspects of people and communities first!
